New Sporting Facility for Picton
In March 2007, almost 12 hectares of land in Fairleys Road, Picton
(adjacent to Jarvisfield) was purchased by Wollondilly Shire Council
for the future installation of Sporting Fields and Facilities.
Since then the Mayor, Cr Col Mitchell has been working hard to
secure funding for the project to go ahead. “Wollondilly Shire
Council has applied for a funding grant with NSW Sport and Recreation
for $200,000 and if we are successful Council has resolved to allocate
$200,000 from Developer Contributions towards the project also,”
says Cr Col Mitchell.
“Wollondilly has a huge number of junior sportspeople.... We have
700 netballers, 1200 Oz Tag players, 900 junior rugby league players,
not to mention soccer players, Australian rules footballers, and
cricket players, as well as many other sporting groups” he says.
“I have been working closely with State member for Wollondilly
Phil Costa, who has opened some doors for us in terms of meetings
with the Hon Kevin Greene, Minister NSW Sport and Recreation.
“Once we have secured some funding and make a start on the project,
we can then apply for further funding that will allow for the development
of the facility,” says the Mayor.
